DJ EXCEL
30 MINUTE WORKOUT
[ARCHIVE]
MISSION.
Bmore Original isnt just a name to represent club and hip-hop producer DJ Excel's hometown of Baltimore, it is the contract he's made between himself and his artists: Be more original.
Whether it's the political Club of Excels Obama-themed "Thats What a Pimp Does" - a song that burned through the blogs and was named 2008 song of the year by the Baltimore City Paper - or his recent mega-mix club history lesson Bmore A.D.D, Excel zigs when the rest of Baltimore Club zags.
All the while, Excel occupies a steady place in Baltimore's underground hip-hop scene, producing forward-thinking boom-bap beats right along side the spastic, high-BPM club music. Bmore Original has no interest in borders between underground and pop, street and club as long as it's good music.
This isn't a surprise though. Excel has been pushing boundaries since his 1995 release "This DJ/Kaptain Jack" on the legendary Unruly Records and moved into the Web 2.0 world with Bmore Original Records in 2004.
The first digital distribution center for Baltimore music, Bmore Original Records sent club around the world through downloading and brought it back again through streams of Bmore Original Radio, which hosted shows from hometown favorites and DJs as far away as France. All the while, Bmore Original Clothing, with the highly-visible logo moved through the city and beyond; hints of the viral marketing that would make "Thats What a Pimp Does" Baltimore's club anthem in 2008.
Bmore Original's forest through the trees approach extends to long-time friend making his way back into music, Emmy, at-home on raunchy club jams and electro-ballads all the same, and The Lyricists, the labels flagship rappers, who hail from outside Bmore entirelytheyre from Port Huron, MI.
After a fruitful distribution of last years L3, The Lyricists (Illtone, Rym-B, and DJ Haus Diesel) moved their collaboration beyond straight business, sculpting the "Transmittin Live" EP with all the beats handled by Excel himself. The result is something as terse and immediate as club, but undeniably underground as well. Truly a result of the labels mantra: Be More Original.

Framed and hanging on the wall of DJ Excel's studio is his 2008 Song of the Year award from the Baltimore City Paper for his Obama-sampling club jam Thats What a Pimp Does and his first 12-inch single, the 1995 Club classic This DJ/Kaptain Jack, released on the legendary label Unruly Records.
These examples of Excels success only introduce his storied career. Between his most recent accolade and his first Club hit is the tale of a Baltimore legend precariously balancing the role of Bmore Club O.G with persistent innovator.
But lets go back to 1995 or so. DJ Excel begins to dabble in his city's music, flipping his hip-hop skills honed from house parties and local production into his first Club single. From there, he works closely with early Club legends like DJ Scottie B, Big Red, and Kool Breez before, in the late 90s, pressing pause on his musical growth to raise his daughter and develop a lucrative career in the mortgage industry.
Excel couldnt keep away from music for too long and returned in 2004 to form Bmore Original Records. Fully aware the days of the 4-track tape and Gemini 24-second sampler hed crafted his early hits with were over, Excel went digital, moving his operation to the web. He created a website that offered downloadable albums, streaming mixes, and the city's first online radio station "Bmore Original Radio" - covered extensively in the 2008 City Paper Big Music Issue.
All the while, Excel reminded everyone of his DJ skills with 2006's Live from Yesterday, a sixty-track mixtape of old-school bliss and refined his Baltimore Club brilliance with the proto-viral Borat Comes to Bmore a track now viewed as the precursor to Thats What a Pimp Does.
2007 brought an official Club remix of Definitive Jux artist Hangar 18's Baking Soda as well as Club releases later in the ear: The Friday Night Bounce LP with the Mobb Deep flipping Alive and The Soundcheck EP which featured the tongue-in-cheek remix of Pastor Mannings' slanderous Barack Obama attacks, Thats What a Pimp Does. Excel's Obama track burned through the blogs and clubs all the same and even found itself on MSNBC and the Howard Stern Show, and ultimately ended up as 2008 Song of the Year in Baltimores City Paper.
In mid summer of 2009, Excel joined forces with the elite Bumsquad DJ's. With new singles developing daily and finding thier way unto mixshows across the globe, Excel is exactly where he wants to be: In a mode of constant creation.
DJ BOOMANTWITTER
DJ BOOMAN
Self-proclaimedand street-certifiedO.G triple O.G, DJ Booman has been synonymous with Baltimore Club music since its inception in the early 90s. As one of the key producers (and the first engineer) for Unruly Records, Booman, along with partners KW Griff and Jimmy Jones as the Doo Dew Kidz, created club classics like Pick Em Up, Watch Out For The Big Girl, and Shout. And Booman continues to bring the Club hits through a constant flow of remixes (Most recently: Jim Jones, Katy Perry, Taxi Doll), traditional Club tracks, and club/hip-hop hybrids.
While keeping a constant, constructive presence in his hometown of Baltimore, DJ Booman also expertly navigates the national market, with his 1996 remix of Michael Jacksons Strangers in Moscow and more recently, a bonus track on Diddys Press Play (Diddy even developed a viral dance contest video for the song), and his association with the world famous Bumsquad DJs.
DJ Boomans served extended stints as a mixshow DJ on Baltimores WERQ 92.3 (92 Q) and WXYV (V 103), toured the mid-Atlantic college circuit as the premiere university DJ all through the 90s, and can still be caught mixing it up in at least one or two Baltimore hip-hop and club spots every week. Paired with his promotional work through Crooked Streetz Entertainment, his Bosstalk mixtape, Promobile Marketing group, and One Stop Entertainment Source (O.S.E.S), DJ Booman himself could be called a one stop entertainment source.
And all the while, he holds it down through Club tracks, a hip-hop production career (the Baltimore City Paper named him Best Beatmaker in 2008), and pioneering Club/rap hybrids with local legends like Mullyman (Party Walk, Bmore Go Harder) and the supergroup of the 410 Pharaohs (Booman, Jimmy Jones, Labtekwon). The 410 Pharoahs 2008 album 410 Funk won Best Local Album in the City Paper (thats two awards for Booman last year if youre counting) and received positive press in XLR8R and numerous House and dance music websites.
2009s shaping up to be an equally fruitful year for DJ Booman as he remains ever-present, through production on Mullymans Bmore Go Harder which has a video by noted artist and video director Tabi Bonney, a Best of the Doo-Dew Kidz mixtape available for free download, and the formal, digital release of "The Return" and "Return of the Real" EPs with Bmore Original Records.
DJ BENNY STIXX
Like so many of Baltimores newer crew of Club DJs, Benny Stixx got his start in the mid-90s, jumping out of his bedroom into house parties and small functions. After many countless hours of practice and mixtapes Benny jumped right into nightclubs and bigger functions trail blazed by Clubs first and second-wavers.
Since the early 2000s, Benny has been dropping mixtapes, Club remixes, and lacing local artists with beats, all the while becoming a ubiquitous live DJ, seen and heard around the Baltimore area in places like Gardels, Baha Beach Club, Club One and many others. Closer to the early DJs in style and grind, Bennys modestly paid his dues, gliding into production work and remixing with a deeper sense of self and confidence.
2008 proved to be his breakout year when his bmore club flips of radio hits like Low, Lollipop, and Love Lockdown became club hits, receiving airplay locally on Baltimores 92Q and other places throughout the DMV. These mixes went even further finding their way into radio mixes in Chicago, Miami, and Atlanta. Benny stayed consistent with his grind and continued producing and performing at constant live DJ gigs.
In the summer of 2009 Benny was officially signed with Bmore Original Records. His bmore club track Being That Drunk received many write-ups and found its way in rotation all over the country in places as far as Japan and Australia. Bennys Wetter Refix proved to be his biggest remix yet and was put in constant rotation in the DMV area and satellite radio. Benny has had continual success with his other radio remixes such as La Calle Ocho and Feel It and has proved to be a staple household name in many mixshows and mixtapes. Benny has completed several Friday Night Bounce mixes for the acclaimed Bmore Original Radio Show.
Currently Benny is finishing his soon-to-be released EP and continues with production and remix work as he bounces between constant live DJ gigs and being a father to his six year old daughter.
JIMMY JONES
Jimmy Jones, born and raised in Baltimore, is known for rocking neighborhood parties in the early 90's, who then went on to rock clubs and hosting all over the east coast. Also, being a legend himself, Jimmy Jones has always been loyal to his partners in crime, the legendary DJ Booman and KW Griff. These three guys have been doing music, since they were little boys.
Jimmy Jones grew up listening to house music and hip-hop, which introduced him to creating his own sound. Himself and DJ Booman started doing shows down Eastern Shore and all over the Mid- Atlantic. Jimmy Jones also held KW Griff and DJ Booman down the Paradox by hosting for them and rocking a crowd of 500, or more, people definitely having the crowd under his command. The City Paper has labeled Jimmy Jones as the "hook master" and that is truly what he is.
Jimmy Jones, DJ Booman, and KW Griff teamed up with UnRuly Records/ Direct Drive Record Pool and went on to create Baltimore club music classics such as, Jimmy Jones's #1 hit " Watch Out for the Big Girls", "Shout", "Where your Money at, Get me pumped" and many, many, more. Jimmy Jones also did a project with 410 Pharoahs, where he came up with the concept for the album "410 Funk". He did songs with David Banner, Raheem Devaughn and Kenny Dope, just to name a few. Jimmy Jones's whole vision is to keep people dancing and losing their minds in the club.
Jimmy Jones's motto is simple
"Pay attention"
THE LYRICISTS
The Lyricists are a gifted and talented Hip-Hop group that hails out of Port Huron Michigan. The group consists of two emcee's: Illtone and Rym-Benda, along with DJ Haus Diesel.
The Lyricists are able to craft a unique sound that combines "rhymes to beats, beats to rhymes" chemistry with the help from their producers, Pro-Logic and Know-it-All, whom reside in Canada. The charismatic team drops conscience rhymes and display witty wordplay over comfortable melodies creating a mix that keeps listening fresh and entertaining. The chemistry shared between the team during their live performances brings out an extra energy that enhances the groups stage presence allowing the music and lyrics to speak for themselves.
In 2000, The Lyricists released their debut album titled "Outta Nowhere", in reference to their location in Michigan (Port Huron). After working hard to get their name known and promoting themselves, The Lyricists dropped their second release in 2003 titled "Anti-Industry". The title opposing the virtual machine which controls the state of hip-hop on a commercial level was the inspiration and motivation to their direction and sound they created. The groups next release, "L3" ('05), short for level 3, symbolizes their third time around on a professional production together as artists who continue to elevate.
You can hear The Lyricists on and in rotation on various internet radio stations from ..Smoothbeats.com.. out of Philadelphia to ..Vinylexchange.com.. out of San Francisco. Their music and products are available online at ..thelyricists.net.. and ..myspace.com/thelyricists... Downloadable MP3..s are also available through Itunes. Check out The Lyricists mixtape release, "Get Heard or Die Tryin", which came out in July 07' which is a mixture of new & old songs dating back to 2002 & the groups first time working with different producers. Since then, The Lyricists signed with an independent label out of Baltimore Maryland (Bmore Original Records) founded by DJ Excel. The Lyricists are set to release 3 Eps, and the first is Produced by DJ Excel titled "Transmittin' Live! The Radio EP". The other two Eps will be produced by their long time partners Know-it-All & Prologic in the following years.
